Death Claims Wm. Fickes, 77
Was Prominent Resident of S.S.
William J. Fickes, 77, retired coal miner and resident of this city most of his life, died yesterday at 8:30 p.m. at his home at 128 West Blake street, South Side, of carcinoma of the face following two years’ illness.
Mr. Fickes who was one of the best known residents of the South Side, was born near Steubenville, November 14, 1848. He was married twice. Miss Sarah H. Ashbaugh to whom he was married October 5, 1869, has been dead 48 years. His wife, formerly Miss Sarah O. Warner, to whom he was wedded February 5, 1880, survives together with eleven children, William O., Akron; John W., this city; Mrs. George Weidner, this city; Mrs. Charles Miller, Canton; Mrs. L.E. Kaiser, this city; Mrs. Bert Quillen, this city; Jesse, Ray, Clarence and Arthur, all of this city and Miss Bessie, at home.
Thirty-three grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and a half sister, Mrs. F.A. Bigler, Bolivar, also survive.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the residence followed by services at 2:30 p.m. at the South Side M.E. church. Rev. Oscar M. Adam will officiate. Burial will be made in East avenue cemetery.
CHARLES HERBERT FICKES (1896 - 1937)

Funeral services for Charles H. Fickes, 56, native of Tuscarawas co and son of Mr and Mrs. John W. Fickes of Dover, who died Saturday at his home at 837 Mahoning ave, Youngstown from a heart attack, will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the King Funeral Home in Youngstown. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight.
Mr. Fickes, an engineer for the Youngstown & Northern Railroad, was stricken after getting out of his locomotive while at work in McDonald. He was born in Goshen June 10, 1896, the son of John W. and Martha Forbes Fickes and went to Youngstown in 1924.He served on the police department vice squad before becoming an engineer in 1937. He was a licensed pilot and flew at the former Jones Airport. He was a member of the B. of L. F & E. and of Sulgrave Lodge, F. & A. M. No. 696.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mina Rick; his parents; three sisters, Miss Jessie Fickes of New York City, Mrs. Robert Quails and Mrs. John Keating, both of Los Angeles and a brother, John M. Fickes of Dover.
WILLIAM ORIN FICKES (1871 - 19__)

50th Anniversary Sunday, June 18
Mr. and Mrs. William O. Fickes, who were born and reared in New Philadelphia, but have resided in Akron for a number of years, will observe their fiftieth wedding anniversary, Sunday, June 18th, at their home at 648 Carpenter street, Akron. Open house will be held in the afternoon from two until four o’clock.Mr. and Mrs. Fickes have five sons and four grandchildren, all of whom reside in Akron and will be present for the golden wedding anniversary. The sons are Lawrence, Gerald, Karl, Robert and Ralph.
Mr. Fickes is 73 years old and Mrs. Fickes is 68 years old. Their marriage took place in Barberton.
JOHN WESLEY FICKES (1873 - 1952)

New Philadelphia – Funeral services for John Wesley Fickes, retired coal miner, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Kaserman funeral home. Rev. James Fisher will officiate. Burial will be in East Avenue Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home tonight from 7 to 9.
Mr. Fickes suffered a heart attack Wednesday while walking across South Side Bridge, according to Coroner Philip Doughten. He had resided on Riverview Place.
He was a member of the Lutheran Church and had resided most of his life in New Philadelphia.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Martha Fickes; one son, John of Dover; three daughters, Miss Jessie Fickes of New Philadelphia and Mrs. Robert Quails and Mrs. John Keating, both of Los Angeles, Calif.; three half brothers, Ray and Clarence Fickes of New Philadelphia and Arthur Fickes of Canton; a half sister, Mrs. William Schlafly of New Philadelphia; three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
BESSIE L. FICKES (1896 - 1972)

Mrs. Bessie L. Schlafly, 76, of 325 5th st. NW, New Philadelphia, a former employee of the old Graff Grocery Store on the Southside, died Sunday night in Union Hospital.
She resided at the 5th st. address eight years and formerly lived on the Southside.
Born at Strasburg, a daughter of the late William and Sarah Olive Warner Fickes, she was a member of New Philadelphia Emmanuel Lutheran Church, its Ladies Bible Class and Dorcas Group and was the last charter member of the Companions of Foresters of American.
Her husband, the late William Schlafly, died in 1967.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Thelma Jeanne) Geltz of Dover; a son, Warren Eugene of New Philadelphia; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Six brothers and four sisters also are deceased.
Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in Emmanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. C. King Wynkoop officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Burial Park. Friends may call at Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. The family requests memorials be made to the Emmanuel Lutheran Church building fund.
