1974 – 1975: Walter Wyss correspondence with Hilda Baehler Hess
In the 1970’s Walter Wyss travelled to Switzerland and gathered family history information. He checked records in Interlaken and Uetendorf, Canton Bern, and spoke personally with Wyss family members. In 1974-75 Walter exchanged letters with his cousin, Hilda Baehler Hess, prior to her own trip to Canton Bern. Hilda Baehler’s mother was Anna Wyss, sister of Walter’s father, Hans (John) Wyss.

Following is information taken from those letters:

Walter traced the Wyss line back to 1692 to the town of Isenfluh. “Everybody in Isenfluh was named “Wyss” 30 years ago. Now, only about 60% are.”
Anna Wyss was born in Thierachern on 8/18/1873. Thierachern is just a few miles from Thun.
Christian Wyss (b 1797) had only one brother and he lived next door. [NOTE: The brother is Friedrich]. Walter Wyss’s father Hans [John] carved his initials, “H.W.” in the door of the house, which is now part of a chicken coop.
Walter enclosed a list showing the 11 children of Christian Wyss and his wife, Anna Maria Wisen. Hilda’s mother was the 7th child. The 3rd child died in childhood and the 6th child was given the same name. Walter’s father was the 9th child.
There was a considerable amount of intermarriage between the Baehler’s and Wyss’s.

Christian Wyss (b 1797) of Thierachern had 10 children who reached adulthood. All male members of the family went to America:
1. Christian, the oldest son, went to Ohio in 1881 and had two sons, Henry and Frank. Frank visited the Medford area sometime in the 1920’s and then lived in Bagley, WI.
2. Friedrich went to America and in the early 1900’s was heard from in California. The family lost contact with Friedrich after that.
3. Alfred lives in Wisconsin, has two children, Helen and William, and is in regular contact with Walter’s family. Helen lives in Chicago, is a secretary to a patent lawyer and never married.
4. Christian Hans (John) lives in Wisconsin and is Walter’s father.
5. Wilhelm (Bill) lives in Wisconsin.
The daughters of Christian Wyss and Anna Maria Waysen remained in Switzerland.
1. Rosina had an adopted daughter, Helene. Helene was actually the daughter of Lissette [3/9/1872-10/20/1891].
2. Lisette died aged 7 [4/11/1864-2/11/1872].
3. Elisabeth married a Frenchman named Valteau and had 2 sons. Maurice, lived in Yerres, a suburb of Paris, was married with 3 daughters. Daughter Yvette, was a school teacher in Yerres and married a man named Pierre Artud.
4. Lisette had died earlier in childbirth or shortly after and her daughter, Helene, was adopted by Rosina. Helene had married a man named Jaccard and their son, Dr. Gaston Jaccard, practiced medicine in Zurich. Walter Wyss visited with Dr. Jaccard and his family.
5.Anna, mother of Helen Baehler, no information given.
6. Lina married Christian Sutter and they had 4 children. The youngest, Hans, lived in Thun and Walter visited him. Hans died of cancer in 1972. Hans’ widow, Vreni, was able to show Walter and Helen both the house where Anna Wyss was born (see photo Canton Bern). Vreni’s stepsister lives in what was called the Uncle’s House.

The information above is a good start but does leave plenty more to be determined. When the Family History Centers re-open, there will be more access to Parish records.
