W.H. Bradshaw’s Recollections of Gettysburg
The following article taken from the Paris Daily Beacon, Paris, Ill., contains recollections of W.H. Bradshaw, of the battle of Gettysburg. Mr. Bradshaw is well known in history, having formerly conducted a large jewelry store here.
W.H. Bradshaw, one of the Civil War veterans who took part in the famous battle of Gettysburg and who will attend the big reunion early in July, recalled some of the experiences today while talking to a few friends at the jewelry store on the north side of the square. Although it has been many years since the conflict and Mr. Bradshaw has forgotten some of the minor details, he thinks he may be able to locate approximate spot on which he fought.
Do you remember whet charges you made, or by whom you were charged or in what noted skirmish you took part?” was asked of Mr. Bradshaw.
“Goodness, no,” he answered, “I didn’t seem to know anything when the fight was going on. All I knew was to fight and fight like blue blazes. It was a case to shoot to save your country or shoot to save yourself. Just fight. That’s all.”
“Do you know where you were when Picket made his charge?”
“I suppose that was the charge made when we were in the valley,” said the veteran. “I know we had been on a hill top and were marched into a valley to repulse an attack by the confederates. They came towards us and it seemed we could not stop them although we finally did. That must have been Picket’s charge. You see we privates did not know any of the officers outside of our own regiment and company and we could not tell who was making this or that charge or who was fighting on this or that wing. All these things came out afterwards in history. We had no way of knowing them during the battle.”
Mr. Bradshaw was under Captain Donaldson and Colonel ? during the battle of Gettysburg. He fought as a member of the First Brigade of the Third Division which was under the command of General Reynolds.
Mr. Bradshaw enlisted with Company B 14th Ind, Infantry, at Terre Haute, the command being known as the Old Post Guards of Vincennes. Mr. Bradshaw’s entire three years of service were spent with the army of the Potomac in and around Virginia. He first fought near Washington and then followed the army in its battles through the Shenandoah valley.
“I have had many a foot race with Jim Kale and Jim Bowles,” said Mr. Bradshaw. “Although I did not know it until afterwards. They were in the Confederate army. Sometimes they would chase us and sometimes we would chase them and I suppose part of the time the two Jims were after me and part of the time I was after them.”
According to to Mr. Bradshaw the whole state of Virginia was devastated by the war. Hardly a mill or a farmhouse was left standing after the three years of conflict so severe had been the battles and so completely had the soldiers cleaned the country of anything fit to eat. Mr. Bradshaw had spent the first winter at Falmouth, the camp being completely surrounded by large timber. By spring not a tree of any description was to be seen for miles around. They had everyone been used for firewood. This condition existed almost entirely throughout the entire siege of Virginia.
Mr. Bradshaw recalls only one of his old comrades, Mr. Brown, his mess mate, who is conducting a small paper in Nebraska. Mr. Bradshaw hopes to meet him at the reunion next week.
