About Our Telephone.
The Wooster Telephone Exchange, established one year ago May 1st by Mr. R.W. Parmenter has proved a financial success and an enterprise of great convenience to our citizens. The Exchange has 24 miles of wire, 12 of which are inside Wooster corporation. The number of messages average 135 per day. The longest line is ten miles, to Shreve, the number of messages on which to Wooster average 125 per month.
Having well established it, Mr. Parmenter has sold the Exchange to the Midland Telephone company operating the exchanges of Ohio, with headquarters at 110 La Salle street, Chicago, Ill. The price paid was $3,500 cash. On Monday last Mr. Parmenter left for Lima to take charge of the Exchange at that place.
Mr. D.H. Pierson takes his place as Manager and Treasurer of the Wooster Exchange, which duties will not in the least interfere with his clothing store business. Miss Lizzie Deer is the present operator, to be succeeded by Miss Stella Bowman on the 1st of June. Mr. Wm. Limb will act as line inspector, repairer and night operator.
The Midland Company propose making important improvements. During the coming summer they will erect all the lines on poles similar to telegraph. Lines will be projected to Orrville and Fredericksburg. Any town in the county can have all the benefits of the exchange by subscribing $60 per mile.

[a long list…]
This amounts to a cash total of $1,535.39, which has been sent from Wooster to Johnstown. But it does not include the cash contributed by the Masonic Fraternity, Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias and other benevolent organizations—nor the cash contributed by a number of the Churches here, all of which contributed in proportion to those named in the above list—making an aggregate hundreds of dollars more.
Provisions and Clothing
In addition to the cash, several hundred dollars worth of provisions, clothing, bedding, etc., were donated and promptly forwarded with the cash, until it is estimated that the whole amount of cash and supplies, thus far contributed by Wooster, is about the sum of $2,500.

I.O.O.F.
Canton Wright, Patriarchs Militant
Initiated in Wooster Yesterday With Grand Exercises
Yesterday was eventful in the annals of Oddfellowship in Wooster, being the date of mustering in the Canton Wright Patriarchs Militant of this city, an organization heretofore not existing here.
A Canton is the Military, of Uniform Rank, of Oddfellowship, all members of which must have been advanced to the highest Degree in the Order and Encampment, that of Royal Purple Degree, before eligible to enter the Canton. Lodges of the I.O.O.F. must be in a highly prosperous condition, with an enterprising membership, before a Canton is organised; hence while there are about 900 Lodges in Ohio there are only 77 Cantons. Wooster Lodge is therefore taking a foremost rank and is complimented for its progressive energy.
The Wooster organization is named “Wright Canton,” in honor of our fellow citizen Anthony Wright, Past Chief Patriarch and Grand Treasurer of the Ohio Grand Encampment. The members thus far are thirty in number, and are already well skilled in military drill, as follows.

Officers And Members
Captain—Forbes Alcock.
Lieutenant—John M. Russell.
Ensign—Samuel K. Hildebrant.
Treasurer—Joseph H. Wilheim.
Clerk—James M. Quinby.
W.H. Baumgardner. Guy E. Temple.
Joseph Kester. Wm. Limb.

The institution of the Canton yesterday was a notable affair, creating general interest. members of the Order from a number of towns and cities were present, while the Cantons of Akron and Ashland were here in full ranks, all sharing the liberal hospitality of the resident brethren, all the Wooster Odd Fellows considering themselves hosts on the occasion, lending aid to the Chevaliers of the Wright Canton to receive and take care of the visitors.

The Akron Canton came on a special train at 2 o’clock and are received and welcomed by Wright Canton. Procession was formed and a grand parade of the principal streets was made, the Chevaliers making a fine appearance in their handsome military uniforms and by their martial bearing. The column marched in the following order.

Great Western Band, of Akron
Akron Canton.
Nashville Cornet Band.
Ashland canton.
Canton Wright, of Wooster.

The march ended at the Odd Fellows Temple on South Market street. Later all the Order assembled there, when Canton Wright with due form and impressive ceremony was instituted by Maj. Gen. J.D. Bell, Department Commander, of Mansfield, assisted by officers of the visiting Cantons.
In the evening a grand banquet, given by Canton Wright and the Wooster Odd Fellows generally, was held at the Armory, served by the proprietors of the Archer House. The festivities there, dining, music, toasts and responses were in progress when we went to press.

Down at the Dispatchers’ office, there is Lew Morrow, a tiger lily from Rochester; H.K. Brady, who is going down to Hagerstown, Md., this month to attend the wedding of a brother, and is only sorrow that he can’t take a bride with him; Fred Stair, a clever fellow who hails originally from the vicinity of Mr. Eaton, and Will Rhodes, all of whom are well along in years and should be benedicts.
The list has grown too long already to say something of all, so we wind up by simply giving the names of a few others. There is billy Stieber, Jacob Solimuck, Jr., Charles Gray, Theo. D. Wooster Odd Fellows last night entertained a large party of visitors from Newman Lodge, North Lawrence; and from Orrville Lodge, Orrville. The visiting brethren came in on the evening train accompanied by the famous Minglewood band. This noted organization, which now numbers under the leadership of William Edwards, seventeen members, demonstrated by their playing that the band is constantly improving. The people of North Lawrence can well be proud of the band as it is composed not only of musicians, but thorough gentlemen as well. Their visit to Wooster was for the purpose of witnessing the “team work” of Wooster lodge in conferring degrees. The visitors were well pleased with the proficiency shown in the work by the brothers and spoke in terms very complimentary of them. At eleven o’clock when the work in the lodge room had been fully exemplified the visitors were escorted to Emil Faber’s where a banquet was served in first-class style, customary with the establishment. John Van Nostran acted as toastmaster, short speeches were made by James H. Hamilton, S.B. Hartzell, D.E. Robinson, and Prof. Chas W. Gilgen, of Orrville; Wm. Edwards, of North Lawrence; C.M. Tawney, L.H. Plank, T.H. Elser, Forbes Alcock, Will Limb, R.L. Mead and others.

On Friday evening last a public installation of the officers of Wooster Lodge of Odd Fellows took place at their Hall on South Market street. It was a memorable occasion of much social interest. The Hall was crowded with men and women, old and young, who were much pleased with the impressive exercises. The installation was conducted in the most able manner by Right Worthy Deputy Grand Master, M.L. Warner, of Cleveland, a former resident of Wooster. After the ritual ceremonies appropriate addresses were made by D.W. Solliday, James A. Shamp and John Van Nostran. Also a recitation—“The Goat”—was given by Deputy Grand Master Warner, the matter and manner of the rendition of which “brought down the house,” all pronouncing it most excellent. By way of refreshments, an elegant supper was served by the I.O.O.F. Auxiliary, the Daughters of Rebekah, of which organization Mrs. James M. William R. Limb died at one o’clock this afternoon at the home of his mother on East Liberty street, of gangrene of the lungs, death being hastened by the rupture of blood vessel. He took cold some weeks since while in Cleveland and had been complaining since that time, although he had only been confined to the house for three weeks. Will Limb was popular with his associates, a genial companion and a young man of excellent character and moral worth whose death will be deplored. He entered the employ of Quinby & Kline when a mere boy and was one of their trusted and valued salesmen when stricken with his last illness. He was a member of Canton Wright Patriarch’s Militant, Wooster Lodge I.O.O.F., Wayne Council Improved Order of Red Men, and an active member of the Young Men’s Democratic Club. He was born in this city and was aged about 26 years, and one of twin sons born to his parents, the twin brother being Harry Limb, of Orrville. The hour for the funeral had not been set when the Republican went to press, but will likely take place Friday afternoon under the auspices of the I.O.O.F.

Death of Will R. Limb.
It has been long since the death of a young man has caused more general sadness in Wooster than the passing away of Will R. Limb who departed this life last Wednesday afternoon, March 15th, at the home of his mother, Mrs. Martin Limb, on East Liberty street. His age was 25 years, 7 months and 5 days. The cause of death was lung disease caused by taking a cold some weeks ago when on a visit to Cleveland. He was born in Wooster, where he always resided, and was a twin brother of Harry Limb, of Orrville.
He was one of the most popular young men in Wooster, one of excellent character in every respect and of good business qualifications. Socially he was much liked, being of genial nature and pleasant disposition. When a boy he entered the employ of the dry goods merchants Quinby & Kline, and continued to be one of their cleverest salesmen until his last sickness. He was prominent in Benevolent orders, being a member of Canton Wright Patriarchs Militant, Wooster Lodge I.O.O.F. and the Improved Order of Re Men. He was also an active member of the Young Men’s Democratic Club.
The funeral took place Sunday afternoon at the English Lutheran Tabernacle, to which place the remains were conveyed from the family residence. Though the day was very inclement from rain and snow, the attendance was very large, estimated at twelve hundred. The Benevolent Orders were present in full ranks and regalia, the funeral being specially under the auspices of the Patriarch Militants. The donations of flowers were many, the coffin covered with various designs of floral offerings of esteem and affection. Among these were a massive pillow from the Quinby & Kline clerks, a broken column from Canton Wright, a sickle from the Daughters of Rebekah, and calla lilies and roses from the Misses Weber, of Manehald.
The church services were conducted by Rev. Dr. W.W. Criley, after which Canton Wright carried the casket to the hearse, and the long procession of the members of the several orders on foot, and relations and friends in carriages, conveyed the body to the cemetery, where it was laid in the tomb with the impressive ritual of the Order. The pall bearers were P.J. Seigenthaler, John Figert, J.M. Quinby, R.T. Bechtel, Harry Kramer, Jos. Kester

Death of Will R. Limb
Will R. Limb, a popular young gentleman and a clerk in the dry goods store of Quinby & Kline of this city, died on Wednesday, March 14, after a protracted illness of a pulmonary character aged 25 years, 7 months and 5 days. He was born and raised in Wooster and enjoyed the advantage of its public schools. He was buried Sunday afternoon from the English Lutheran church which was filled with friends and acquaintances of the deceased, the services being conducted by the Rev. Dr. W. Criley.
He was in membership with a number of the beneficiary organizations of this city which expressed their sorrow and sympathy for the dead in a pathetic and most impressive manner. The attendance at the grave was unusually large and there was a universal manifestation of grief. He was a young man possessed of many excellent traits of character, ? honest, dutiful to his employers and fully possessed of their confidence. Unto him the lilies of the years were just unfolding their blooms and colors, but in their early blossoming, through the lips of death was blown upon them a killing frost.
With him now is silence, rest and all that we do not know of mysterious waiting. He is forever dead to the noise of the footmen, the march of the procession or the reading of the ritual by a brother but that he enjoys pleasant companionships and walks with unseen Brothers and Daughters, who among us can say he does not. Or are the loving voices we listen to here and the sweet songs that are sung not heard or sung on the other side.

To the Sachem and Brothers of Uncas Tribe No. 57 Improved Order Red Men.

Your committee charged with the sorrowful duty of preparing a suitable memorial upon the death of Past Sachem, William R. Limb, present the following as a tribute to his memory:
The Great Spirit of the Universe, has, in His infinite wisdom, summoned from our midst to the happy hunting grounds beyond the dark waters, the soul of Past Sachem William R. Limb, an honored and beloved member of our Tribe. Brother Limb was in the flower of early manhood and enjoyed the friendship and esteem of a large circle of devoted friends. He was an honorable, upright member of our Order, a faithful attendant upon the Council fires of our Tribe, and a young man of unblemished character. That by the first two was held in the lodge room, at 2:30 p.m. and consisted of the ritualistic services for the dead of the year, Joseph Taggart and Kroft Fisher of the lodge, and Mrs. I.H. Myers, of the Rebekahs. S.S. Shilling read a sketch of the life of Brother Fisher, T.H. Elser of Brother Taggart and Mrs. Dr. C.A. Lerch of Mrs. Myers. The attendance at the services was only fair. After these exercises had been concluded 22 members of Canton Wright marched to Wooster cemetery where they conducted the service laid down by the Sovereign Grand Lodge over the tomb of Chevalier William Limb. The Canton placed a lovely floral design representing crossed swords and a potted plant on the grave. The Canton also paid a mark of respect to Chevalier Frederick Faber by placing a bunch or roses tied with the colors of the Rebekahs over the grave of his wife. The services were pretty and interesting.

After services at the Hall had been concluded Canton Wright, Patriarchs Militant proceeded in a body to Wooster cemetery, where the ritualistic service of this branch of the order was carried out the the graves of departed chevaliers were decorated, a floral sword and cross being placed on the graves of Chevalier Anthony Wright and Chevalier Wm. Odd Fellows’ Memorial Day.
Graves of Departed Brothers Strewn With Flowers.
Fraternal Red Letter Day
Most Successful Exercises of the kind ever Held in Wooster—Many Visitor’s Assist in the Services—List of Dead of the Year—Fine Music By Bands.
This was Oddfellows’ Memorial Day in Wooster, and to Wooster Lodge, No. 42, I.O.O.F., belongs the credit of conducting the most beautiful and successful services of the kind ever held in the county under the auspices of a fraternal organization.
The people of the city took a hand in making the day a success, and showed the host of visitors that they were welcome by decorating their homes and places of business in honor of the guests. The attendance from all the lodges in the county was good, the brothers from Dalton, Orrville, Applecreek, West Salem, Creston and Fredericksburg were largely in evidence. The city of Ashland sent the banner delegation, Canton Ashland, with 38 swords, Ashland Lodge, Daughters of Rebekah, the famous Ashland Military Band, and citizens, to the number of over 200. Many of the prominent residents of the city being in the party, Canton Mansfield, of Mansfield, was represented by 20 chevaliers who marched in fine style. Dalton Lodge was accompanied by their noted 11th Regt. Band, 20 members. Individual members of lodges in Akron, Massillon, Canton and North Lawrence were also present. Daughters of Rebekah were also present from many points.
Canton Wright No. 77, under the command of Capt. Forbes Alcock, and the Wooster City Band met the visiting brothers on their arrival in the city and escorted them to the Armory. The last to reach the city were the brothers from Mansfield.

The Exercises
The speaking exercises were held in the City Opera House. The different bodies being formed in line and marching from the points of rendezvous. The large auditorium was filled to overloading the lower floor being occupied already by the Brothers and Rebekahs. Past Grand James A. Shamp called the assemblage to order. The Carlin-Wertenburger Quartette, of West Salem, composed of Misses Flo and Effie Carlin and Clara and Dede Wertenberger, sang a selection in a way that deserved the liberal applause bestowed. The young ladies created a very favorable impression and will doubtless be heard in Wooster again. Rev. George S. Hackett, D.D., of Applecreek, made the invocation. James A. Shamp made a few opening remarks that were timely and to the point. Mrs. J.M. Russell, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. J.T. Keister, of Wooster, gave a beautiful solo in her usual pleasing way. Capt. Forbes Alcock then read the list of dead of the year as follows:

Rev. S.F. Neikirk, then gave an address that was listened to with marked attention, as he spoke of the beautiful customs of honoring the dead. Miss pearl Clapper and Bechtel Alcock and Carrol F. Miller at the piano gave a duett that was a gem. This number, like those that preceded were of a sacred character. Gen. J.C. Whitaker, department commander of Ohio Patriarchs Militant, closed with an address that was fitting to the day, and in words that were full of meaning and listened to most attentively. He devoted his attention to the Militants and mentioned the dead Chevaliers Will Limb, Anthony Wright and Frank Schuch. The Quartette gave another number. Rev. A.M. Bird of Fredericksburg, pronounced the benediction and the audience was dismissed. A column was then formed and proceeded to Wooster cemetery in the following order:

Etter is Coming Back For First County Fair He’s Seen Since 1880
Charles F. Etter, citizen of Akron, is coming back to Wooster this week to attend the first Wayne county fair he has seen here since 1880, and in a reminiscent mood he wrote for the Akron Times, some of his recollections of Wooster as he remembered it.
D.W. Kimber was mayor, Archie Dice was city marshal, George Miller and Harry Huber were policemen. C.C. Parsons was common pleas judge and William Coulter was sheriff, with his two sons, Gerald and Fischer, as deputies.
The public schools in those days were numbered according to wards: No. 1 was on S. Buckeye street, No. 2 was on N. Bever street, No. 3 on the corner of North Walnut and Larwill street. Prof. Eversole was superintendent. The late L.N. Glover came to Wooster every Thursday and taught music in the schools. Mr. Glover was a resident of Akron and one of the Akron schools bears his name.
Wooster boasted of the best criminal lawyer in the country in the person of John McSweeney, Sr.
Judge Ross W. Funk, now judge of the court of appeals in this district, I can well remember as studying law under the great McSweeney.
Back in the old days there were, of course, no automobiles, but there was bitter rivalry among three of Wooster’s transportation men who operated a bus and cabs to and from the depot and all parts of the city. No doubt many of the present old timers of the city remember the battles of S.S. Schilling, Will Lundy and Charlie Lawhead.
I still have in my mind a number of my young schoolmates of the old days. There was Will Horn, Fred Faber, Heinie Schuch, Fred Figert, Will, Max and and Carl Limb, Irv Frick, Ed D’Miller, Art Bissell, Art carr, Will and John Warfel, Frank Wendling, George and Ed Feightner, “Cooney” Long, Effie, Munn, Etta Munn, Cora Oyler, Julia Wendling, Emma Betson, Lillie Slegenthaler, Anna Coulter, Ella Dice and the Jones sisters, daughters of Lake Jones. How pleased I would be to see any or all of them at the fair this week.
The principal places of interest in the outlying districts in those days were the Stibbs distillary to the northeast; east was the Mougey brewery and the Naftzger flour mill; to the southeast was the old Stonebottom and the Dolly Varden swimming holes, the old paper mill and Robinson’s hill; to the south the Catholic church and the Ohio house; to the southwest was Prairie Lane, Killbuck bottoms, the German church and Spear’s furniture factory; to the west Christmas run, Brandstetter’s sand bank and fair grounds; and the high school, university and Reddick’s dam, and the notorious I.E. house in the north.
Baseball was a great sport in Wooster back in the old days. Mansfield was the principal rival of the D. Nice team, considered one of the best teams in that section. Many of the ball tossers of those two teams were later making their mark in the big leagues. Among them were Hank Luce, Larry Twitchell and Ed Delehanty.
But that sport did not hold a candle to the firemen’s tournaments which were held in Wooster, Tiffin, Fostoria, Findlay and other Ohio cities. The events were races by hose cart teams and also hook and ladder teams of the cities named. Wooster had a hose company which took numerous first prizes. It was the Alert No. 3. The hook and ladder company also was humdinger, with Fritz Reece as ladder climber.

Rebekah Lodge Was Formed in 1891, is Growing Steadily
Your 100th Anniversary Committee has asked the Rebekahs to submit a brief history of Wwayne Rebekah Lodge.
First may we congratulate our Odd Fellow Lodge on this happy and wonderful occasion, secondly for giving wives, mothers, sisters and daughters the privilege of membership in this great fraternity as the Rebekah Lodge.
There were several attempts made to organize a Rebekah Lodge in Wooster, but finally in 1891 the Odd Fellows met with success and Wayne Rebekah Lodge No. 323 was instituted on Feb. 5th.
The State Officers were in charge and twin classes were initiated, one in the afternoon and one in the evening. With about one hundred members, we were granted a charter. The first Noble Grand was Sister Emma Wacker and the first Vice Grand was Sister Mayme Palmer, with Brother Shilling and Brother Will Limb filling the supporters chairs for the first year.
We have on our roll today a few charger members and some members who joined the first year. They are Sister Lura Myers, Sister Elizabeth Snavely, Sister Margaret Goetz, Sister Alice Geiselman, Sister Anna Hilderbrand and Sister Icie Tawney. These Rebekahs have many pleasant memories of the new Lodge that was instituted 54 years ago.
In recording this history I must mention some of our departed sisters. It was their labors and interest in this great fraternity that have given to us a firm foundation to build our present membership of 252 members.
Sister Julia Russel was elected Assembly in 1920. She was chaplain in the degree work for many years.
Sister Lizzie Miller served as noble grand of the degree staff for 44 years. She served as warden of the Ohio Rebekah Assembly in 1907.
Sister Martha Kramer was appointed by Sister Russel to serve as assembly chaplain during her term of office. Sister Kramer served on the degree staff in the past noble grand chair.
The records show that Sister Elizabeth Snavely served as treasurer of our lodge for thirty-five years and has held important places on degree staff for fifty-two years. She is regular in attendance and is still a willing worker.
There are others, whose service in the early days of the lodge, I could mention — Sister Lizzie Paulus, Sister Hattie Limb and Sister Ella Keister, who served on the degree team for thirty years.
A number from Wayne Rebekah Lodge have received the Degree of Chivalry, the highest honor they can receive in Odd Fellowship. These sisters are Julia Russel, Lizzie Miller, Dora Stevens, Charlotte Hiler, Martha Kramer, Elizabeth Snavely, Alice Geiselman, Lizzie Paulus and Ella Keister.
In recording history, it is only proper to mention members who joined during the first ten years. These members have all contributed to the success of our lodge, C.M. Tawney, Emma Sang, Florence Limb, Dora Stevens, William Lightner, Lillian Lightner, Nellie Boigegrain, Pearl Atherton, Adam Goetz, Clementine Fritz, Mary Collins, Linda Lautenschlager, Carl Limb and William Barnard.
We are 54 years old this year and our membership is growing with a fine staff of officers. We will have a good report for our inspection this fall.
May you have a successful anniversary party and in closing, may we add this word of greeting —
Greetings glad and service true;
Working for our order every day.
Living — giving all the way,
Faithful, loyal service true,
Here’s our best to you.
