The Other Martin Limb

There was another Martin F. Limb/Limp/Leimp who shows up in searches for Wayne County, Ohio, born approx. 1845 and apparently the nephew of Martin Limb.

1866 ▸ October 17. Arrival date in New York City for Martin Lump from Nassau, Germany on the ship “Ericsson” departing from Antwerp, Belgium, destination Ohio.

1870 ▸ August 26. CENSUS. Wooster City First Ward, Wayne Co. Household includes Charles Lazaro with wife Catherine and children William and Charles and Martin Limp, age 25, stone mason, from Germany.

1872 ▸ June 12. Marriage of Martin Limb and Sophia Fankhouser in Wayne Co. The Marriage Record reads:

Mr. Martin Limb having made application for a License for his nephew Martin Limb and Miss Sophia Fankhouser and being duly sworn, says that Martin Limb is of the age of 21 years and has no wife living;….

The handwriting on the Marriage License form could be read as “Leimp”, which spelling also occurs in search results.

1887 ▸ August 5. Death of Sophia Fankhauser Limp. Buried in West Lawn Cemetery in Winesburg, Holmes Co, Ohio.

Rose and Emma remained in Millersburg, Ohio, for the rest of their lives and never married. As seen from newspaper articles below, Rose and Emma socialized with the Limb’s of Wooster, particularly with Hattie and Florence, who also remained unmarried. Rose and Emma were contemporaries of Hattie (b 1872) and of Florence and her twin brother, George (b 1875).

After the death of his wife, Sophia, where Martin Limp went is unknown. He is not buried in Millersburg with his wife and two daughters. The 1900 Census shows son, John, living with his maternal uncle. The 1910 Census shows his two daughters as roomers in Millersburg.

Next Wednesday Martin Limb will leave Wooster for Burlington, Iowa, where he proposes to permanently locate. He is an excellent fellow and a clever gentleman, and we are therefore sorry to lose him from among us, where he has resided for twenty years. He is one of the very best stone cutters in this section, an expert at that trade, industrious and responsible. We recommend him to all at Burlington.
