Fickes Family

1869: 5 October, William Jefferson Fickes married Sarah Ann Ashbaugh in Tuscarawas County, OH.

The earliest Fickes traced thus far is the addition of Jacob Fickes and Maria Brown, parents of John B. Fickes. Newspaper articles now available online cited below give details that are backed up by vital records.

Information gleaned from these newspapers entries include:
▸ John B. Fickes lived in New Portage, Summit Co, and sold his home to move to New Philadelphia in October 1888, aged 58.
▸ Grandma Fickes lived in New Portage, Summit Co, and received visits from John B. Fickes after he moved to New Philadelphia, accompanied by his son, William, who lived in New Philadelphia.
▸ Grandma Fickes’ name was Maria, she was a widow and her husband was Jacob Fickes.
▸ Jacob Fickes served in the War of 1812.
▸ Grandma Fickes was also visited by Mr. & Mrs. J.R. Kauffman, of South High street, Akron. Spelling of last name varies.
▸ Grandma Fickes lived with Mrs. Emily Shaw.
▸ John B. Fickes seemed to be a widower, as no wife is mentioned in these newspaper entries.
▸ John B. Fickes had a cousin, John, who lived in Cumberland, West Virginia. Cumberland is very close by, being in the sliver of West Virginia panhandle which separates Pennsylvania and Ohio in the area of Steubenville, OH.

Jacob Fickes

1823: August 19, Marriage of Jacob Fickes and Maria Brown in Jefferson Co, OH. They probably lived near Steubenville.

Pension record for Jacob Fickes, veteran of the War of 1812, tells us that:
1815 ▸ February 9. Enlistment date of soldier, Jacob Fickes. He was a Private with Captain Fowler’s Company, Virginia Militia. He came in at the very end of the war.
1815 ▸ March 11. Discharge date of soldier. He received Bounty Land – will look into this.
1823 ▸ Marriage of soldier to Maria Brown in Jefferson Co, OH.
1853-1855 ▸ Residence of soldier was Jefferson Co, OH.
1864 ▸ October 10. Death of soldier, Jacob Fickes, at Kilgore, Carroll Co, OH.
1883 ▸ Residence of widow was Akron, Summit Co, OH.
1885 ▸ March 12. Death of widow.

1850: October, Census for Knox Township, Jefferson County, Ohio, lists two consecutive Fickes (Fichas) households:

1740 –
James, age 25, male, Laborer, born Ohio
Mary, age 20, female, born Ohio
Daniel, age 3, male, born Ohio

1741 –
Jacob, age 54, male, Laborer, born Pennsylvania
Maria, age 40, female, born Ohio
Rosamund, age 22, female, born Ohio
John, age 20, male, born Ohio
Harvy, age 18, male, born Ohio
Maria, age 14, female, born Ohio
Elizabeth, age 12, female, born Ohio
Jacob, age 15, male, born Ohio
Wm, age 3, male, born Ohio

My theory is that James is a son of Jacob, listed immediately below. James is listed with his wife Mary and 3-year old son, Daniel.

The next property is Jacob, most likely the father of James. Jacob is listed with his wife Maria, and children from Rosamund through Jacob. John, age 20, would logically be John B. and the last child, Wm, age 3, quite possibly, William Jefferson, the son of John and grandson of Jacob.

John B. Fickes

1830: 14 September, born in Pennsylvania
1848: 19 September, married to Caroline Miller in Jefferson county, Ohio. (search continues for additional verification)
1848: son, William Jefferson, born 14 November.
????: Caroline Miller Fickes presumably died.
1850: 31 October, married to Matilda Vantilburg in Ashland county, Ohio.
1852: October, daughter, Lucinda, born.
1857: daughter, Jane, born.
1860: Census, Canal Dover, Dover Twp, Tuscarawas Co, household includes John Fickes (29) Carpenter; Matilda (31), Lucinda (10), Wm (7), Jane (3).
1870: Census, Pierce P.O., Pike Twp, Stark Co, household includes John Fickes (39) Wagon Maker and Matilda Fickes (53) Keeping House.
1880: Census, New Portage, Norton Twp, Summit Co, household includes John Fickes (57) Laborer and Matilda (63) Keeping House.
1888: John B. sold his house and belongings in New Portage to move to New Philadelphia, where his son William lived. The Summit County Beacon and the Akron City Times reported the return visits made to visit Grandma Fickes and other relatives and friends until 1890.

Marriage recorded for a John Fickes and Caroline Miller in Jefferson county, Ohio.
Note below that William J. Fickes death certificate, below, lists his mother’s name as Miss Miller, with no other information known.

Marriage certificate for John Fickes and Matilda Vantilburg in Ashland county, Ohio.

1860: 16 August, Census for Loudon Township, Carroll County, Ohio, lists Jacob Fickas household:
1361 –
Jacob, age 65, male, Laborer, born Pennsylvania
M (Maria), age 53, female, born Pennsylvania
R (Rosamund), age 30, female, born Ohio
M (Maria), age 24, female, born Ohio
E (Elizabeth), age 22, female, born Ohio
Jacob, age 19, male, born Ohio
Wm (William), age 15, born Ohio.

Rosamund’s age is off by a bit and the census taker didn’t bother to spell out the names of the female children.

William Jefferson Fickes

1848: 14 November, born Steubenville, Jefferson county, Ohio. His father was John B. Fickes and his mother’s maiden name was Miller.
1850: 31 October, John B. Fickes, father of William J., remarried Matilda Vantilburg.
1869: 5 October, William J. Fickes and Sarah Ann Ashbaugh married in Tuscarawas county, Ohio.

Because William and Sarah Ann were both underage (William was 20, Sarah Ann was 16) the marriage required parental consent. Sarah’s father, William Ashbaugh, signed consent in person and the consent of John B. Fickes was signed and witnessed by William Ashbaugh.

1870: Census, New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas co, William (21) Laborer and Anna (16) Keeping House.
1870: Census, New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas co, William Ashbaugh (46) with wife Matilda (45) and son John (19) listed directly above William and Anna Fickes.
1871: 24 March, son, William Orin, born. The name in the birth records is Emmet O., so there must have been a name change.
1873: 10 May, son, John Wesley, born. The name in the birth records is John Oscar, so there must have been name change.
1874: 25 November, daughter, Estella B. born.
1877: daughter, Laura Anne born.
1878: 12 August, Annie Ashbaugh Fickes died and was buried in Fair Street cemetery, New Philadelphia, Ohio.
Children of William J. Fickes and Sarah Ann Ashbaugh.

In Memoriam.
Died in Lockport, August 12th, 1878, Mrs. Sarah A., wife of Wm J. Fickes, Esq., aged 24 years 8 months, and 6 days. Deceased was a daughter of Mr. William Ashbaugh, at whose residence she died. She left, besides her deeply bereaved husband, four infant children, and a large circle of friends to mourn her early demise. Mrs. Fickes was a woman of many excellent qualities, which greatly endeared her to those who had the advantage of her acquaintance. She was amiable, kind, confiding and intent on doing good according to her opportunities. She was a christian; having been received into the fellowship of the Lutheran Church by Dr. Steck, on the first Sabbath he spent in New Philadelphia in the spring of 1876. Her funeral, which was largely attended, occurred on the 14th inst., her pastor, Dr. Steck, officiating. The bereaved have the [illegible] consolation, in this case, that their loss is her gain.
A Friend.

Son Of Former Local Couple Is Summit County’s Champion Baby
A babe of six months who romps at day and sleeps at night and is declared by doctors to be near physical perfectness at his age—that is Ralph Orin Fickes, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Fickes, 169 Shelby avenue, Cuyahoga Falls. Mr. and Mrs. Fickes are former New Philadelphia residents, having lived here until two years ago. Mrs. Fickes is the daughter of Mrs. Mary Keyser, 144 North Third street this city.
Dr. F.D. Smith, of Akron read of lusty babies and suggested to Fickes that he take the measurements of his six-month-old baby. Fickes did and wondered at the result. The baby was as large as others more than twice his age.
The measurements are: Heighth, 27 inches, weight 22 pounds, chest 19 inches, head 18-1/2 inches, forearm 6-1/2 inches, waist 19 inches, calves 7 inches, thighs 10-1/2 inches, wrist 4-1/2 inches.
Baby Fickes weighed 13 pounds at birth. The signs of health exhibited at birth increased with age. At six months he has two teeth, and likes mashed potatoes, water, bread and milk and fruit.
“He seldom sleeps more than two hours a day and has never kept us awake at night,” says his father. “He holds to a stick while I lift him from the floor and romps around like other children. He usually laughs and seldom cries.”
Mrs. Fickes says Ralph is just an ordinary baby, ordinarily raised. Neither she nor her husband have ever been ill to any extant. They eat lots of fruit and vegetables and little meat.
“The baby receives such care as his mother thinks is necessary to keep him clean and neat,” says his father. “His mother is a handy lady and is always there to give him care. But she has no frills or new ideas in the way of caring for infants.”
