Happy Social Hours.
A Pleasant Gathering at Madison Hill—Other Events
From Wednesday’s Daily.
One of the delightful social gatherings of the season was held last evening at the charming home of Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Patton, on Madison Hill. It was a meeting of the Sunday School class of John A. Hoffman, of the English Lutheran church, and invited friends.
Those present heartily enjoyed themselves playing various games, not least of which was “speech-making,” indulged in by all. “The honors” were carried off by Menno A. Blough, who received the “booby-prize” for a “blank” oration, and by J.A. Hoffman who happily was voted the “Reed” of the house and given, not the “palm,” but an orange.
Light refreshments, including candies and pure maple sugar, were served by the hostess. Those present were J.A. Hoffman, E.C. Eberhart, Howard Reed, E.W. Snyder, Jean Thompson, M.A. Blough, Quincy Patton, Leslie C. Lawrence, Mary Acker, Ida Lytle, Laura Sellers, Hattie Limb, Sadie Kauffman, Anna Huffman, Cora Lonsbury, Anna Graham and Clara B. Surprised Their “Sister.”
Mr. and Mrs. Harry H. Miller Pleasantly Remembered.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry H. Miller, of East Larwill street have good reasons to long remember Tuesday evening, Oct. 17th, ’99—the 15th anniversary of their marriage — when the members of Wayne Rebekah Lodge, of which Mrs. Miller is an active member, gave them a degree in Oddfellowship, which, while it is not “down in the books,” was one greatly enjoyed by all present. As Mr. Miller was about closing the house for the night, he heard a noise on the porch. Upon opening the door, the crowd took possession of the house and from that time on Mr. and Mrs. Miller were the guests of their friends.
The evening was very pleasantly spent in social enjoyment. Among other things they were presented with a beautiful parlor lamp as a testimonial of the high esteem in which they are held. Sister Rebakah Mrs. Dr. Lerch in her attractive and interesting style made the presentation address.
Those present were Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Kiester, Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Barnard, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Snavely, Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Blandford, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Goetz, Mr. and Mrs. John Penick, Mr. and Mrs. John Russell, Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Kramer, Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Hugh K. Martin, adjutant, American Legion of Ohio, was to speak on Thursday on “Legislation,” and Charles L. Darlington, chairman of the Legion’s Americanization committee, was to address the convention on “Americanization.” Col. McQuigg addressed the ladies in the first session. He said in part “The American Legion is the most universal organization in the United States. Never has an organization grown so fast or had a more noble purpose. There are now 10,200 posts in the country, comprising about 2,500,000 members. Ohio has 508 posts, an average of six to each county.” Col. McQuigg believes that everything the American Legion will attempt to accomplish in the future will need the assistance of the Women’s Auxiliary to make it a success. The five women units started in Ohio have now increased to more than 100.

Tribute Again Paid Veterans
All Wooster Takes Part in Memorial Day Services of An Impressive Nature.
Under fair skies and other favorable conditions, did all Wooster and many people from other parts of Wayne county pay tribute to the memory and deeds of soldiers, living and dead, of all wars in Memorial Day services Monday forenoon. From 9 o’clock to noon thousands of people aged from babies in arms to civil war veterans pay the 80-year mark gathered in the Wooster cemetery, which never looked more beautiful and sublime. Beautiful garlands decked the graves of loved ones and to the personal touch of each grave were added floral tributes from Memorial Day committee, placed upon the graves of veterans by school pupils under the direction of guides from the organizations in charge of the day’s celebration.
The Wooster Board of Trade band headed the line of march from Memorial Hall to the cemetery, where the day’s exercises were carried out. During the passing of the marchers through the business section, all traffic was stopped. The streets were lined with spectators. Military officers followed the band and were followed by many military and fraternal organizations. The hundreds of school pupils carried flags.
The Day’s Program
Judge L.R. Critchfield was president of the day. Capt. C.P. Foss was chief marshal, James Bucher read Lincoln’s Gettysburg address, Attorney Daniel C. Funk was the orator, Attorney H.R. Smith was chairman of the general committee and Capt. Fred C. Redick was secretary. Mrs. Frank Campbell was treasurer. To the satisfaction of all members of the committee, the day’s events were carried out impressively as had been planned.
At the cemetery Rev. S.D. Harland pronounced the invocation, the band played a selection, the G.A.R. and Sons of Union Veterans ritual was read in memory to the deceased veterans, three volleys and taps were given by Company K, 145th O.N.G., James Bucher read Lincoln’s Gettysburg address, the band played another number, Mr. Funk gave the oration, all joined in singing “America” and the assembly was dismissed by Rev. Juergens.
On the return march to the city the Woman’s Relief Corps paused at the bridge to pay tribute to naval veterans. Garlands were strewn upon the running water. The marchers disbanded at the square.
The Day’s Oration
Speaking on the subject “The American Ideal,” Attorney Daniel C. Funk of Wooster, a member of the American Legion, traced the history of the United States as interpreted by our wars. “Always,” he said, “we have fought, not for conquest, but for conscience; not for territorial aggrandizement, but always for an ideal, the American ideal of liberty founded on justice.”
Developing the thought that “a nation’s destiny is determined by its ideal,” he contrasted the rise and fall of ancient Egypt and Rome, and of modern Germany and Russia, and other nations, with the ever growing and more powerful United States, “whose government,” he declared, “had been founded and established on the solid rock of justice, equality and human liberty.”
The attributes of this ideal when applied to government, are three “1. A realization of our responsibilities to our fellow man, 2. a realization of our civic responsibility, 3. a realization of our responsibilities to God.”
The three ways in which this ideal is acquired are environment, education and service, especially service in time of crisis, service in time of war.
“This spirit, this ideal born of the revolution, was fostered and developed by its patriots, and by them handed down to the succeeding generation. Likewise, the veterans of each succeeding struggle fostered and developed the American ideal during their day and handed the principles on which our government had been founded down to their sons.”
Speaking to the Civil War veterans, Lieutenant Funk said, “It is because you fought for, because you fostered, because you preserved and handed down to your posterity the ideal of America that the present generation of soldiers battled in 1898 and again in 1917 for these same principles.”
It is the task of the present generation to preserve and to pass on to posterity the American ideal. Having entered the world war that future wars might be made impossible, the means left at the disposal of the present generation are education and example. To this present generation he emphasized the latter, “That you might so live, that you might so conduct yourselves in your relations to your fellowmen, to your government and to your God, that the soul of America might be said to give, to move, and to ? ?..?
The speaker closed with an apt reference to the American flag, declaring that “national ideals are represented by national emblems, that the American flag is the one flag in all the world that stands for liberty and all that it implies.”

Thousands To Parade Here Late In June
Grand Lodge I.O.O.F. Convention Promises to Provide Numerous Spectacles.
One of the really outstanding events for Wooster in years will be the meeting of the Grand Lodge of Ohio Oddfellows scheduled to be held in this city during the week of June 20th, preliminary announcement of which was made some weeks ago.
General committees for the occasion held a well attended meeting last night at I.O.O.F. hall, and plans for the big occasion were outlined. committees are now entering upon their work, which will come to a climax during convention week.
While the number of delegates here for the Grand Lodge sessions will number only about seventy five, special events for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights will be open to the general public, and it was predicted at last night’s meeting that no auditorium in the city will be large enough to accommodate all who will desire to witness the spectacles.
On Monday evening will come the reception to the visiting delegates, which will take place at the city hall. There will be addresses of welcome by officers of Wooster Lodge, the Rebekahs, Mayor W.H. Black, and a representative of the Board of Trade. Responses will be made by the Grand Master and Grand Secretary.
On Tuesday a special feature will be the sight seeing trip at 3 p.m. which is to wind up at the Experiment Station in a general I.O.O.F. picnic.
The biggest of the week’s events will come on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the form of a gigantic parade, in which Cantons and I.O.O.F. lodges of many neighboring cities will participate. Several thousand Oddfellows are expected to be in the line of march.
A feature of this parade will be the band of 36 pieces from the I.O.O.F. home at Springfield, made up of boys and girls of the institution. They have a most excellent band.
Following the parade, the pageant, “Cinderella,” will be given, likely at the high school auditorium. This is a beautiful spectacle, produced by some sixty children from the Oddfellow home on a scale comparable to mammoth pageants in big city theaters.
On Thursday evening the Degree of Chivalry is to be given, and Friday will bring the convention to a close.
There will be morning and afternoon business sessions on each day for the delegates.
The general committees which are now preparing for the big event are as follows:
Advisory Committee — J.S. Schultz president, Chas Lautenschlager secretary, W.C. Myers treasurer, Jas. A. Shamp, C.M. Tawney, J.R. Warner, C.L. Miller and Jos. O. Fritz.

Equipment Is Being Donated
Newly Established Stopover For Homeless Given Several Boosts.
Much progress has been made this week in the establishing of the veteran’s relief station on North Buckeye street. Through the cooperation of several Wooster people and firms the work is progressing rapidly.
There is still need for more articles. Included in those most vitally needed are pillows, bed clothing, a library table, and more chairs. The station also is in need of some table ware and can use almost any article which is needed around a home.
Through the Buckeye Aluminum Co., the station now is in possession of a full set of cooking utensils consisting of boiler, stew pans, skillets, griddles, pitchers, cups, batter bowl and other articles.
The Misses Florence and Hattie Limb were donors of six good straight backed chairs, a rocker, a clock, a bed and a rug, which was needed very badly. Material for the work table for the kitchen was supplied by the Wm. Curry Company.
Mrs. Emmet Saddler and Wayne Markley gave the station two rocking chairs. Nick Amster gave the half dozen pairs of pajamas and the Wooster Welfare association gave a half dozen bath robes.
Following is a note which was received from a couple who found lodging at the station a few nights ago:
“Thanks a lot for your kindness and friendliness toward my wife and myself. I will be in a position, I hope, in a few days to repay this favor and I will not forget.
“Here is success to your association and all connected with it.”

Biggest picnic in town was the American Legion Auxiliary’s picnic for the Legion and their families. They were having supper at the largest pavilion in the City Park, with nothing in particular planned as entertainment – except the park’s amusements for the children, and talking for the grownups.
During a very short business session Mrs. Arthur Greene, president of the Auxiliary told the members that she had already draped the charter in memory of Miss Hattie Limb, the Auxiliary’s first president. And that there would be a memorial service for Miss Limb at the next formal meeting. Also Mrs. Greene appointed Mrs. Herschel Martin, Mrs. Howard Black, and Mrs. Raymond Hagerman as a nominating committee to made a report at the next meeting.
Feature of the evening was the giving away of the naval-print Wedgewood plate – the second one that’s been given this year, with proceeds going to the National Defense Fund. Mrs. Hagerman received the plate, by the way.

The Stars At The Temple Gave A Beautiful Memorial
A pair of beautiful white gates on the alter, centre with a star, and spotlighted from below, formed the background for a memorial – “The Gates Ajar” – enacted at Eastern Star last evening by six of the Past Matrons. Rebekah Lodge Was Formed in 1891, is Growing Steadily
Your 100th Anniversary Committee has asked the Rebekahs to submit a brief history of Wwayne Rebekah Lodge.
First may we congratulate our Odd Fellow Lodge on this happy and wonderful occasion, secondly for giving wives, mothers, sisters and daughters the privilege of membership in this great fraternity as the Rebekah Lodge.
There were several attempts made to organize a Rebekah Lodge in Wooster, but finally in 1891 the Odd Fellows met with success and Wayne Rebekah Lodge No. 323 was instituted on Feb. 5th.
The State Officers were in charge and twin classes were initiated, one in the afternoon and one in the evening. With about one hundred members, we were granted a charter. The first Noble Grand was Sister Emma Wacker and the first Vice Grand was Sister Mayme Palmer, with Brother Shilling and Brother Will Limb filling the supporters chairs for the first year.
We have on our roll today a few charger members and some members who joined the first year. They are Sister Lura Myers, Sister Elizabeth Snavely, Sister Margaret Goetz, Sister Alice Geiselman, Sister Anna Hilderbrand and Sister Icie Tawney. These Rebekahs have many pleasant memories of the new Lodge that was instituted 54 years ago.
In recording this history I must mention some of our departed sisters. It was their labors and interest in this great fraternity that have given to us a firm foundation to build our present membership of 252 members.
Sister Julia Russel was elected Assembly in 1920. She was chaplain in the degree work for many years.
Sister Lizzie Miller served as noble grand of the degree staff for 44 years. She served as warden of the Ohio Rebekah Assembly in 1907.
Sister Martha Kramer was appointed by Sister Russel to serve as assembly chaplain during her term of office. Sister Kramer served on the degree staff in the past noble grand chair.
The records show that Sister Elizabeth Snavely served as treasurer of our lodge for thirty-five years and has held important places on degree staff for fifty-two years. She is regular in attendance and is still a willing worker.
There are others, whose service in the early days of the lodge, I could mention — Sister Lizzie Paulus, Sister Hattie Limb and Sister Ella Keister, who served on the degree team for thirty years.
A number from Wayne Rebekah Lodge have received the Degree of Chivalry, the highest honor they can receive in Odd Fellowship. These sisters are Julia Russel, Lizzie Miller, Dora Stevens, Charlotte Hiler, Martha Kramer, Elizabeth Snavely, Alice Geiselman, Lizzie Paulus and Ella Keister.
In recording history, it is only proper to mention members who joined during the first ten years. These members have all contributed to the success of our lodge, C.M. Tawney, Emma Sang, Florence Limb, Dora Stevens, William Lightner, Lillian Lightner, Nellie Boigegrain, Pearl Atherton, Adam Goetz, Clementine Fritz, Mary Collins, Linda Lautenschlager, Carl Limb and William Barnard.
We are 54 years old this year and our membership is growing with a fine staff of officers. We will have a good report for our inspection this fall.
May you have a successful anniversary party and in closing, may we add this word of greeting —
Greetings glad and service true;
Working for our order every day.
Living — giving all the way,
Faithful, loyal service true,
Here’s our best to you.
